p63 is a marker of prostatic basal cells, but it is not expressed in the vast majority of prostate tumors. p63 is also expressed in myoepithelial cells and mammary gland basal cells, salivary gland and prostate, basal cells of skin, but not in glandular epithelial cells. p63 evaluation is mainly used for the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma (basaloid squamous cell carcinoma and spindle cell carcinoma), basal cell papilloma, and also for the differential diagnosis of benign versus malignant myoepithelial cell tumors and adenocarcinomas.
