MSH6 is a mismatch repair protein, frequently expressed in patients with microsatellite instability of high frequency (MSI-H), condition related to autosomal dominant inheritance, also known as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). Expression is also seen in patients with sporadic (MSI-H) colorectal cancer. Antibodies against MLH1, MSH2 and MSH6 can be used to screen patients and their families for this medical condition. It has been reported that colorectal cancer patients with microsatellite instability high frequency (MSI-H) have better prognosis than those with microsatellite instability low frequency (MSI-L) and microsatellite stability (MSS).
